A Discussion of the Images and Cultural Implications of Chivalry in Records of the Taiping Era

《太平广记》是宋代李昉等人编写的类书,其中卷一九三至一九六题为"豪侠",收录了多则唐人传奇故事,内容却与今天一般认识中的"侠义"观念颇有不同。概言之,《太平广记》中的"豪侠"故事具有三种内涵及特点:一是豪奢侈靡;二是具有传奇性及神秘色彩;三是追求人格的独立自由。这些"豪侠"故事及形象反映出唐人独特的精神风貌,具有独特的文化意蕴。

Records of the Taiping Era is a reference book compiled by Li Fang et al.in Song Dynasty.In this book,the volumes 193-196 are called the chivalry stories,including many romantic tales in Tang Dynasty.However,the contents of these stories are different from what we have known about chivalry nowadays.In short,the chivalry stories in Records of the Taiping Era have mainly three meaning characteristics:extravagantly luxurious,legendary and mysterious,in pursuit of personality independence and freedom.These chivalry stories and images reflect the spirituality of people in Tang Dynasty and have unique cultural implications.
