The Interactions between Intertitles and Images in Chinese Silent Films

字幕的穿插使用是无声电影一大重要特征。在中国无声电影中,字幕与影像共同构建完整叙事。通过将罗兰·巴特的图文理论与镜头内的场面调度以及与镜头之间的关联相结合,从字幕与影像之间的互动透视中国无声电影意义的生产机制和建构过程。字幕与影像有四种关联方式:字幕指认场景或场景中的元素;字幕诠释和解读影像;字幕与影像互为补充;字幕澄明影像传递的不明显信息。这些不同关联方式能够引导观众注意力,影响观众对银幕和现实世界的理解和感知。

This paper investigates how Chinese silent films generated meanings in four aspects according to the specific ways intertitles interplayed with images: by connoting with each other, intertitles identified, interpreted, and articulated the information conveyed by the visuals;while by forming a complementary relationship, intertitles served as supplements to the pictorial tracks. Extended Roland Barthes’ arguments on textimage relations into a deeper layer by introducing mise-en-scene and relations between shots into the discussion, I argue that intertitles and their interactions with images oriented spectators’ attention and influenced their understanding and perception of the world both on and off the screen.
