Superoxide dismutase 1(SOD1) is one of the most important members of antioxidant enzymes in organism. Its classical function is to remove superoxide anions and participate in the metabolism of reactive oxygen species, and its gene was regulated by multiple transcription factors. In recent years, SOD1 has been found to act as a transcription factor to regulate the oxidative stress responding genes, and moreover, it has the ability to affect the stability and/or functions of proteins/enzymes that have interactions with it via its antioxidant property. Deficiency of SOD1 expression is closely related to the abnormal metabolism of glucose and lipids. The underlying biological mechanism is being analyzed from the above aspects and the progress will be reviewed hereby.
