Han Yu’s “Temperament and Features” and His Description of Characters in His Ancient-Style Poem Writing

韩愈继承了杜甫在长篇古诗中将写人和记事紧密结合的表现方式,通过古诗的散句化深入挖掘其叙述的潜能,进一步发展了在寄赠酬答类题材中提炼自我形象和描写人物的创作艺术。其中与各类人物交往的作品既生动传神地描绘出世情百态,又最能显示出韩愈本人"疾恶甚严,爱才若渴"的性情面目。其创新意义在于扭转了大历以来应酬诗日渐空洞单调的趋势,并为抒情诗开出了借助人物刻画以刺时述怀的创作路向。

Han Yu(韩愈)followed Du Fu(杜甫)in his ancient-style long poem writing by using the way of expression with a close combination of character description and event recording.He made an in-depth exploration of the potential of narration through turning ancient-style poem lines into prose-like sentences,he further developed the creative art of refining self-image and describing characters in his dedicated and responded poems.Among them,those poems by which hecommunicated with various kinds of figures vividly depicted the feelings and emotions in the human world.They also could best show his own temperament and features of"abhorring evil and adoring talents".Thus,he changed the tendency in which responsive poem writing was tending to be hollow and monotonous during the time of Dali(大历)under the reign of the Emperor Daizong of the Tang Dynasty(唐代宗).For lyric poem writing,he opened up the path of creation to satirize social malpractices and express people’s feelings with the help of characterization.
