Implicitation as Strategy for Translating Logical Connectives in English Texts of Mineral Engineering

矿业工程英语具有行文连贯性和逻辑严谨性的特点,因而该类文本的逻辑连接词占比较高,表达显性的逻辑关系,而汉语则多通过互文表达逻辑关系的特点。因此,汉译逻辑连接词时应采用隐化的翻译方法,以忠实性原则为基础,使用补偿的手段来再现原文。本文通过英译汉实例分析,探讨了增补、转折、因果、时空四类逻辑连接词的隐化翻译方法。

English for mineral engineering is characterized by coherence of the text and strict logic, leading to much use of explicit logical connectives in the text. In contrast, the Chinese language largely depends on intertextuality to express logical relationship. Thus when translating logical connectives, the translation method of implicitation should be adopted. This paper discusses the application of implicitation in translating four types of logical connectives including additive, adversative, causal and temporal connectives in English for mineral engineering.
