Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,written by Jonathan Safran Foer,is a multimodal novel,in which such modes as format,color and falling image are“meaningful forms”,and constitute multimodal narrative,together with language mode.Format mode narrative is a kind of trauma writing,describing the sad life of Old Thomas and his wife.Color mode narrative guides and promotes the development of the plot,carries Oscar’s life experience and his memory of his father,and awakens his father’s keen love during his lifetime to enrich“the meaning of life”.Narrative of falling image mode,as“the most critical moment”,produces a strong visual impact,and sublimates the meaning of falling image with its ideal of surpassing reality.Format mode,color mode,and falling image mode,along with language mode,construct the meaning of the novel,and provide a new perspective for literary review.
