Translating and Disseminating Yan Lianke’s Works in Europe and America:In Conversation with Yan Lianke

对谈讨论当代著名作家阎连科作品在欧美译介的启动、后期的系统策划推介及其在英语世界的传播与接受。基于拉图尔等人的行动者网络理论而设计,着重考察参与阎连科作品译介与传播的重要行动者,包括作家本人、经纪人、译者、出版社及其他有关人士,他们之间的交互及如何联结成一个有效的译介与出版网络,发现欧美译介阎连科作品的模式是在文学经纪人和策划人的共同推动和安排下,由商业出版社系统策划推介并招募汉学家进行翻译。该模式有突出优点,但目前以之译介中国当代文学的个案不多,值得推广。

This interview discusses the initial launching in Europe and America,and the subsequent systematic planning of translation projects involving Yan Lianke’s works as well as their dissemination and reception in the Anglophone world.Designed with reference to Bruno Latour et al’s actor-network theory,it aims to examine the network of key actors,including the author himself,his literary agents,translators publishers and other people concerned involved in the process of translating and disseminating Yan’s works for a western audience.The interview reveals that the model adopted in Yan’s case is one where the commercial publisher,responding to both the literary agent and the planner’s studied planning pursues systematic translation and publication of Yan’s oeuvre while enrolling a particular sinologist as the primary translator.Despite its noticeable strengths,this model has not yet been extensively applied in introducing contemporary Chinese literature to the west and therefore is worth promoting.
