Study of Yuan Yanbo’s Epitaph in the Northern Wei Dynasty and the Yuan Family in the Northern Dynasty

北魏源延伯墓志,近年出土于洛阳市,颇具书法与史料价值。该志对于补正和理清志主父子事迹与南匈奴人为响应六镇起义而围攻夏州的统万城保卫战有关细节颇有价值;对于探明源姓渊源与其家族在北朝的传承亦大有裨益。在北朝至唐代重门阀的时代背景下,该家族以出自南凉王室后裔的身份,又兼具北魏皇族共同的渊源而数世荣耀,而且因汉化很早,人才辈出而文武兼备,因之几朝显赫。

Unearthed in Luoyang City,Henan Province in recent years,Yuan Yanbo’s epitaph in the Northern Wei Dynasty was of great significance in calligraphy and historical value.Besides,it was also of great importance in rectifying and clarifying the deeds of the epitaph owner and his father as well as the details of the battle of defending Tongwancheng,which was besieged by the southern Huns in response to the Liuzhen Uprising;it was also of great benefit to the exploration of the origin of the Yuan family and its inheritance in the Northern Dynasty.Under the background of thinking highly of the family’s power and influence from the Northern Dynasty to the Tang Dynasty,as descendants of the Nanliang royal family and the common origin of the Northern Wei Dynasty,the Yuan family had been honored for many generations.Moreover,because of the early Sinicization,talents from the Yuan family came out in large numbers and both civil and military,so the Yuan family had been very prominent with high popularity for several dynasties.
