维多利亚时代的时代特征和个体的生命经验将爱德华·伯恩-琼斯塑造为一位忧郁的艺术家。伯恩-琼斯作品中女性的悲伤凝视,象征着对美的渴望。美不是伯恩-琼斯逃避现实的方式,反而是其迂回介入世界的路径。艺术家通过凝视意象悬置观者的认知,影响观者的潜意识;通过睡眠意象、音乐意象营造出时间凝滞的效果,并强调画作的二维性,暗示着美的世界不可进入。对美的渴望与美的世界不可抵达之间的张力,成就了伯恩-琼斯的艺术咏叹。
Victorianism and Edward Burne-Jones'life experience made him a melancholy artist.In his artworks,the female characters'sorrowful gaze symbolizes the aspiration for Beauty as the highest truth.Beauty is not Burne-Jones'escape from reality but his approach to the world.In his paintings,gaze suspends the viewers'cognition and infl uences their subconsciousness.Burne-Jones stills time by the imagery of sleep and music,emphasizes the bidimensionality of the painting,and implicates the inaccessibility of the world of Beauty.The tension between the aspiration for Beauty and its inaccessibility made Burne-Jones'melancholy art.
