Further Discussion on the Original Intent of Lao zi

在宇宙自然观上,老子认为宇宙自然是有机的、活的系统,动力源与创造源在系统之中。在社会历史观上,老子认为由大道之世到暴力相向的文明墮落是一自然历史过程,人无力扭转,并表达了一种乌托邦思想。在人文价值方面,老子倡导慈悲博爱的精神。在人格追求方面,老子提倡强毅坚韧、独立有为的人格。

In terms of his outlook on the universe and nature,Lao zi(c.571-c.471 BCE)believed that the natural universe is an organic and living system in which lies the source of power and the source of creation.In regard to his perspective on social history,Lao zi contended that the degeneration of civilization from the world consistent with Dao to violent confrontation is a natural historical process that people are unable to reverse,and expressed a kind of utopian thought.With respect to humanistic values,Lao zi advocated the spirit of compassion and fraternity.In the pursuit of personality,Lao zi called for a steadfast,tenacious,independent and promising character.
