《威尼斯的石头》概述约翰·罗斯金(John Ruskin)于1851-1853年分别出版了《威尼斯的石头》的三卷本(图1:The Stones of Venice),他详细地考察了威尼斯的建筑,描述了超过八十座教堂,主要讨论了拜占庭时期、哥特时期和文艺复兴时期的威尼斯建筑,并对威尼斯的城市历史进行概括。此书第一卷销量惨淡,但在缓慢的起,步之后,它便对英国的建筑风格产生了颠覆性的影响,哥特复兴式建筑逐渐取代了古典复兴式建筑,成为英国建筑的新风格。罗斯金的建筑理论吸引了许多年轻的建筑师,他们普遍认为在罗斯金的新学说中有一些值得注意的方向。

As a famous British critic,Ruskin was attracted by the local architecture when he lived in Venice.Therefore,he wrote The Stones of Venice with the intention of exploring the craft and history of Venetian architecture.As he says in his book,"hope makes the stones of Venice a touchstone."Venice's architecture combines the past and the future.It is not only the integration of Arabic architecture,but also the cornerstone of British Gothic revival.Here,the author tries to analyze the influence of"Oriental style"on Venetian Gothic architecture,and how Ruskin constructs a coherent British identity through the evolution of Gothic architecture in Venice.
