小畑译《李白诗集》深度翻译的“多元因果”论视角解读

Interpretation of Thick Translation in The Works of Li Po:The Chinese Poet by Shigeyoshi Obata in the Light of Multiple Causation

《李白诗集》小畑薰良英译本中使用李白画像、衬页、译者序、译者导读、注释、参考文献与索引等大量内副文本元素,呈现出显著的深度翻译特征。本文运用皮姆的多元因果论对这些特征进行考察,发现小畑运用的深度翻译策略乃是特定社会历史文化背景下材质因、目的因、形式因和动力因相互作用、合力促成的产物。同时本研究认为,深度翻译策略对促进汉语古诗词外译具有借鉴意义。

In Shigeyoshi Obata’s English translation of The Works of Li Po: The Chinese Poet, there are plenty of peritextual elements like portrait of Li Bai, flyleaf, preface, introduction, annotation, bibliography and index, which are remarkably characterized by thick translation. The present paper discusses them from Pym’s multiple causation, namely the material cause, final cause, formal cause and efficient cause, and suggests that thick translation in Obata’s version is just the result of these four causes interplaying one another and working together in a specific social, historical and cultural community. In the meantime, this study shows the value of thick translation in promoting the global dissemination of classical Chinese poetry.
