Heterotopic ossification(HO) is characterized by pathological bone formation in normal soft tissue, which occurs clinically in ligaments, muscles and tendons around joints, and the dysfunction caused by HO would seriously affect the quality of life. The pathogenesis of HO remains unclear. Vascular endothelial cells differentiate into bone cells from mesenchymal stem cell intermediate by endothelial mesenchymal transition(Endo-MT). Local inflammatory signaling factors or other factors in the tissue microenvironment mediate the differentiation of endothelium-derived mesenchymal stem cells into chondrocytes and osteoblasts so as to induce HO. This paper summarizes the research progress of Endo-MT in HO.
