Projection Mechanism of Conceptual Metaphor in English Metaphorical Proverbs

英语谚语作为一种特殊的语言形式,常常反映自然常规、社会真理,或者生活常识等,而为数众多的英语隐喻则富含浓厚的隐喻意义。这源于此类谚语符合概念隐喻的投射机理,即将一种概念域的经验投射到另一概念域,藉此表达特定的言语交际意图。隐喻型谚语的意义表达和传递可以通过概念隐喻的投射机理得到有效的解释。隐喻与谚语相结合,谚语为载体,隐喻是手段,二者协同完成话语者真实话语意图的表达或传播。基于Lakoff和Johnson的概念隐喻理论,从思维与认知的角度,阐释英语谚语与隐喻之间的联结方式,揭示不同的概念域在谚语中的映射关系。

English proverbs,as a special form of language,often reflect natural conventions,social truths,or common sense of life,and a large number of English metaphors are rich in metaphorical meanings.This is because such proverbs conform to the projection mechanism of conceptual metaphor,namely,the experience of one conceptual domain is projected onto another,so as to express the specific communicative intention.The meaning expression and transmission of metaphorical proverbs can be effectively explained by the projection principle of conceptual metaphor.In the combination of metaphor and proverbs,the two cooperate to complete the expression or dissemination of the real discourse intention of the speaker,withmetaphor being the means and proverbs the carrier.Based on Lakoff and Johnson’s conceptual metaphor theory,this article illustrates the connection between English proverbs and metaphors from the perspective of thinking and cognition,and reveals the mapping relationship between different conceptual domains in proverbs.
