常任侠通过古代文献资料和近现代考古发现的遗物互相推证,探讨了古代乐舞与戏剧的起源、形式和动机等问题。他立足于劳动创造乐舞的唯物史观和进步的文化发展史观,侧重于探讨原始乐舞的表演形式,将音乐舞蹈和戏剧的起源、形式、发展及动机等问题,与原始人类的劳动生活联系在一起,与社会进步和文化发展联系在一起。他对中国早期乐舞和戏剧史的研究,极大丰富了该领域的研究成果,充实了远古乐舞戏剧史研究的资料库,许多观点有着极重要的参考价值。其研究不足在于,他没有对我国古代乐舞的本质和特征等详加说明,也没有对戏剧是如何从原始乐舞中产生的,以及二者之间的又是怎样的具体关系等问题作出清晰的论证。

Through ancient documents and modern archaeological discoveries,Chang Renxia discussed the origin,form and motivation of ancient music and dance and drama.Based on the historical materialism of labor creating music and dance and the progressive view of cultural development,he focused on the discussion of primitive music and dance performance forms,linked the origin,form,development and motivation of music,dance and drama with the labor life of primitive human beings,social progress and cultural development.His research on the history of early Chinese music,dance and drama has greatly enriched the research results in this field,and enriched the database for the study of ancient music and dance drama history.Many viewpoints have extremely important reference value.The deficiency of his research lies in that he did not elaborate on the essence and characteristics of Chinese ancient music and dance,nor did he give a clear demonstration on how the drama came into being from the primitive music and dance,and what kind of specific relationship between them.
