As a Japanese colony from the late Qing Dynasty to the end of World War II,Taiwan was a Japanesespeaking area in 1945.Four years after the War,the Martial Law period in Taiwan began and all communication between Taiwan and Mainland was severed. However, translators on the mainland still played an important role in the history of translation in Taiwan. There were more than 400 mainland translators whose translations were circulated anonymously in Taiwan without their knowledge. On the other hand, more than 90%of the translators in the 1950s and early 1960s were so-called"mainlanders"who came to Taiwan with the KMT government.Since the government emphasized the superiority of Mandarin, translators from the mainland had an edge over their Japanese-educated Taiwan Residents counterparts for decades. This article aims to describe the above phenomena and their historical, linguistic and political reasons.
