Zhang Zongxiang's Commitment to Rare Book Preservation

张宗祥一生中执掌过两大图书馆馆务:一为京师图书馆,一为浙江图书馆。其善抄书,精校勘,一生钞校古籍六千余卷,保存下来的有两千余卷,在古籍保护事业上作出了突出的贡献。他的贡献在于:从原生性保护所涵盖的工作内容看,一是古籍采访,扩大馆藏;二是认真编目,拾遗补缺;三是注重古籍修复,培养修复人才;四是关注古籍及古籍雕版之保护,惜古有法。在再生性保护方面,其组织补抄文澜阁《四库全书》,将毕生精力投入古籍钞校中,与一些藏书家结下了珍贵的抄书之谊,主张选印《四库全书》,为古籍的再生付出了个人心血。

Zhang Zongxiang had led two libraries in his life,the Capital Library and Zhejiang Library.He has copied more than six thousand volumes of rare books,with only two thousand volumes preserved well.He made outstanding contributions to ancient book preservation and conservation.Zhang did a great job in the primordial preservation and conservation by firstly,enlarging the ancient book acquisition,expanding the collection of ancient books,secondly,cataloging carefully and supplementing the catalog,thirdly,emphasizing the ancient books repairing,cultivating repairing talents,and fourthly,caring for the preservation and conservation of ancient books and woodblock for printing.From the point of regeneration preservation and conservation,we can see that he worked hard to copy Si Ku Quan Shu of Wen Lan Ge,devoting his life to the traditional handwritten copy of ancient books,he also made friends with some bibliophiles when copying ancient books together.Zhang gave his suggestions to improve the copy of Si Ku Quan Shu.In one word,he has spared no efforts to regenerate ancient books.
