Fairy tale writing is a prominent feature of Russian writer Guzel Yakhina’s The Children of Volga, which is reflected in the time-space structure, themes and images of the novel. This paper analyzes the fairy tale writing in the novel, comparing the chronotope of the real world and fairy tale world and focusing on the integration and confrontation of the fairy tales’ and novel’s texts. Fairy tale writing, as the main poetic means throughout the novel, plays an indispensable role in the style, genre and the interpretation of the author’s thoughts. In the narration dominated by realism style, fairy tales give the novel an idyllic romantic atmosphere, while the bold fantasy and surrealist plots give the novel some characteristics of magic realism, which makes the text become a kind of genre synthesis. Yakhina resists the reality with the fairy tale writing, and explores the deep core of poetic spirit in it. She shows universal feelings in a broad sense with deep compassion and sympathy, and presents a spiritual strength beyond human sufferings.
