Mexican artist Diego Rivera’s paintings are full of Russian elements, which are brimming with communist revolutionary ideals. For a long time, there have been many academic researches on the revolutionary character of his works, while the artistic quality has often been ignored. Based on the cultural semiotics of Lotman, especially the theory of semiosphere, this paper explores text meaning regeneration mechanism in Rivera’s masterpiece Man at the Crossroads from such aspects as the combination of revolutionary character and artistic quality, coding and decoding of textual meaning and social context of readers’ interpretation so as to elaborate upon the integration rather than contradiction between ideological and artistic qualities, hoping to induce more academic attention and research on the artistic value of Rivera’s works.
