Peter Carey,a famous contemporary Australian novelist and a representative one of Australia new school writers,has been awarded many prizes like Booker Prize,Commonwealth Writers prizes,etc.His short story American Dreams,written in 1974,is one of his outstanding early works.This novel focuses on the dilemma of characters when facing with the American culture,and reveals the profound influence of American culture on Australia in the 1970s based on the theory of cultural hegemony,which triggers the novelist’s refl ection on and worry about the construction of Australian identity under such infl uence.
