A science fiction play set in the initial stage of the Artificial Intelligence revolution in America,Operation Sidewinder by Sam Shepard is written as a philosophical reflection on the relationship between technology and mankind.Through the image of an escaping cyborg in the Sidewinder Operation project,Shepard dramatizes the moral issue of technology’s transgression against human subjectivity through the development of AI.Through the disasters brought to the Hopi tribe by America’s military space project, the play foretells technical civilization’s transgression against the primary human civilization’s ritual and myth within a terrestrial Eden.Focusing on the core issue of technology and mankind in the age of AI,Operation Sidewinder is both a textual reflection on the initial stage of the AI revolution and a philosophical meditation on humanity’s crisis of subjectivity in the posthuman age.
