Celeste Ng’s novel Everything I Never Told You features affective depiction and affective agency.Perusing the Chinese American protagonist’s feelings of shame in the novel,this paper discusses the relationship between the white gaze and ethnic shame,analyzes the protagonist’s failed attempt to integrate into mainstream society through self-denial,and demonstrates the agency and constructiveness of shame.Shame awakens the subjectivity of Chinese Americans,and transforms into a subversive power against the white gaze,strengthens Chinese American ethnic identity and improves inter-ethnic relations.
