Cantonese Students of Hosei University’s Crash Course

1904-1908年间,法政速成科的入学人数超过1868人,名字可考的粤籍留日生有87人,毕业生则有77人。清末粤籍留日学生在法政速成科毕业后,有人继续升学亦有人选择回国。回国者从事教育,任职广东法政学堂,培育法政人才;亦有人通过学成考试、入官考试,踏入仕途。部分粤籍留日生对清政府抱有幻想,鼓吹保皇立宪,也有相当部分人在日本接受西方民主思想后认识到革命的必要性,走上革命的道路,为推翻封建王朝贡献了伟大的力量。他们之间的政治对立,引发了两场论战。不论是在鼓吹立宪还是在宣传革命的过程中,粤籍留日生共同唤起了青年知识分子对参与政治的觉醒,促使民主革命运动迎来最终的胜利。

From 1904 to 1908,more than 1,868 students were enrolled in Hosei University’s Crash Course,87 of whom were Cantonese students whose names can be verified,and 77 of whom were graduates. In the late Qing Dynasty,some Cantonese students studying in Japan pursued academically further and some returned to China after they graduated from the crash course. Some of the returnees engaged in education and worked in Guangdong School of Politics and Law to cultivate legal and political talents. Also some graduates took the graduation exam for international students,and the office exam to be officer. Some Cantonese students had illusions about the Qing government and advocated royalist constitutionalism while a considerable number of them realized the necessity of revolution after accepting the western democratic thought in Japan and embarked on the road of revolution. They did make great contributions to overthrowing the feudal dynasty. The political opposition between them led to two controversies. In the process of advocating the constitution and making publicity of the revolution. The Cantonese students studying in Japan aroused the awakening of the young intellectuals to participate in politics,and thus promoted the final victory of the democratic revolutionary movement.
