Due to the linguistic and cultural differences,it is difficult to find a Chinese semantic equivalent to an English malapropism.Of Shakespearean plays,Much Ado About Nothing is the most typical one in using malapropism as a comic device. The Chinese translators of this comedy employ different translation approaches to malapropism according to different historical contexts and translation theories. This paper tries to offer a new strategy for malapropism translation in Much Ado About Nothing by analyzing the mechanism of malapropism via the structure of“subtext-text”and making comparison of their existing translations respectively. To be specific, this new strategy that has been applied in the recent RSC version of Much Ado is using confusable idioms alongside footnotes.
