Through a comparative analysis of Chinese translations of Shakespeare’s Measure for Measure, this study explores how dynamic performability is reflected in the translation of paralanguage in dramatic texts.Non-verbal symbols,in the forms of vocal alternants, segregates, characterizers and modifiers, are indispensable components of the play text, and thus can be considered as factors to test how its translators handle dramatic effects of the source text.Ying Ruocheng’s and Zhu Shenghao’s treatments of the play’s paralinguistic elements testify to the validity of dynamic performability, which otherwise remains“fuzzy”and“unreliable”,and enable us to figure out how the paralinguistic symbols play a significant role in helping readers’understanding of the play text in the target language.
