Morena Wona’s Indigo(also named Mapping the Waters)is a rewrite of Shakespeare’s play The Tempest, rewriting the history of family colonization and the anti-colonial ideas contained in Shakespeare’s classic texts. The text subversively rewrote the characters of Shakespeare,Mirada, and Keleban in Shakespeare’s novels, not only letting the characters on the fringe of the narrative enter the center, but also reconstructing their gender identity.Exploring the ambivalence of love and hatred of the colonists and examining the violence and schizophrenia brought about by hybrid identities will help to further understand the author’s desire to establish a female community based on love and tolerance.Indigo not only shows the author’s courage to challenge Western classics, but also demonstrates the ethical care of female writers to build a community across race and gender.
