The Implication and Translation of the Flag Image in Mao Zedong’s Poems

毛泽东诗词意象丰富,历来为人所称道。旗帜意象在毛泽东诗词中经常出现,逐渐发展出了特定含义,中国新民主主义革命发展进程与毛泽东的旗帜意识和写在诗词中的旗帜意象密切相关。毛泽东诗词的旗帜意象多姿多彩,旗帜飞扬姿势多样,不仅反映了艰难的革命斗争形势,解答了“红旗到底能打多久”的问题,还鲜明有力地表达了坚持高举工农红旗和武装斗争的重要性,表达了毛泽东革命必胜的信心。然而,对旗帜意象的理解和重视程度的不同产生了不同译本。文章列举国内外部分译者的译文加以分析,探讨中西译者文化背景与意识形态的差异对译文的影响,以期为讲好党史故事和传播中国文化做出贡献。

Mao Zedong’s poems are rich in images and have always been praised. The flag image often appears in Mao Zedong’s poems and gradually generates a particular significance. The progress of China’s new democratic revolution is closely related to Mao Zedong’s flag consciousness and the flag image in his poems. The flags and banners in Mao Zedong’s poems are colorful and have various flying gestures to not only reflect the difficult struggle environment, but also answer the question how long can the red flag be held evidently and forcefully. It also clearly expresses the importance of holding high the red flag of workers and peasants and of armed struggle, and Mao Zedong’s confidence in the victory of revolution. However, the different understandings of the image of red flag yield different rendering. This paper analyses some translations at home and abroad to discuss the influence of cultural and ideological differences between Chinese and Western translators on the translation, so that the history of Chinese Communist Party and Chinese culture can spread well.
