Retreat and Redemption——On the Intrapsychic Conflict of Intellectuals in Jiangnan Trilogy by Ge Fei

"江南三部曲"是格非耗时数年完成的系列长篇著作,它以知识分子为描写对象,从清末民初到二十世纪,展现了几代知识分子对乌托邦的追求,以及这一美好愿景在残酷现实面前破产的悲剧。随着时代的发展,在物质至上的社会,知识分子的美好理想与当下的社会现实格格不入,知识分子逐步边缘化,从而导致其堕入物质和精神上的双重窘境,因此只能凭借建造乌托邦来进行自我救赎。可是在这过程中知识分子的个人私欲和理想纠缠在一起,以及在建造乌托邦过程中知识分子自身暴露出来的缺陷导致了知识分子的失败。而格非在"江南三部曲"中对主人公知识分子的人生轨迹和内在心理的描写以及对知识分子自身的反思,也折射出了20世纪中国知识分子的内心冲突。

Jiangnan Trilogy is a series of long works written by Ge Fei. It describes the pursuit of Utopia by several generations of intellectuals and the tragedy that their beautiful visions were broken in the face of cruel reality during the time from the late Qing Dynasty to the 20 th century. With the development of the times,intellectuals were gradually marginalized and their beautiful dreams were incompatible with the materialistic society,which led to their falling into both material and spiritual dilemma. Therefore,they could only redeem themselves by building Utopia. But in the process of building Utopia the intellectual’s personal desires and ideals intertwined together and they themselves have exposed their defects causing their failure. In a word the description of the life track,inner psychology of the intellectuals and the reflection on the intellectuals themselves in Jiangnan Trilogy also reflects the intrapsychic conflict of Chinese intellectuals in the 20 th century.
