Agnes Smedley’s Archives in America and Her Legendary Life

As a well-known American journalist,writer,and social activist in China.Agnes Smedley is also one of the most famous alumni of Arizona State University.Plenty of valuable archives about Smedley were preserved in the university’s special collection,which became rare first-hand materials for the study of her life and thoughts.This article describes the tortuous collecting process of these archives by describing Professor MacKinnon and his wife’s persistent pursuit over the years.It is particularly noteworthy that many materials of this collection arc related to Smedley’s career as a journalist in China,reflecting the important historical events that took place in China during the Anti-Japanese War and World War II from 1938 to 1948.While introducing this rich collection,the author also attempts to introduce Smedley’s legendary and distinctive life experience based on her own works,authoritative works on her biography,and the photos,manuscripts,and correspondences collected by the Arizona State University Library.
