The role of“Grandma Li”in Legend of the Red Lantern,starring actress Gao Yuqian,has influenced a generation for nearly half a century.The author of the article played“Grandma Li”at her elementary school in the 1970s Beijing;she continues to sing the arias in the United States today.Personal memories include the popularization of“model operas”,the restoration of traditional operas,the relations among teachers and students,parents and neighbors,and the interaction between Beijing Opera artists and overseas opera fans.
