郭嵩焘与芝加哥大学所藏稿本《沅湘耆旧诗集续编》

芝加哥大学东亚图书馆所藏未刊稿本《沅湘耆旧诗集续编》是一部反映清朝中、后期湖南诗歌作品成就的总集。该书接续清道光年间刊刻之《沅湘耆旧集》的传统与体例,收道咸同光四朝一千二百多诗主的一万六千多首诗﹐并为《沅湘耆旧集》和《沅湘耆旧集前编》补五百多诗主的诗作一千七百多首。每位诗主,凡生平可考者均撰有小传,“以诗存人”,是一部学术和文献价值很高的湖南文献。该稿本成书过程曲折,历时约半个世纪,且从未刊刻,又被认为在抗日战争初期即已毁于战火,加之现存稿本不见编纂者之名,遂使该书的编者、成书经过和书稿的下落成为历史疑案。本文以近现代著名藏书家伦明先生70多年前对该书的记叙为线索﹐仔细追晾﹑考证各种历史文献,终于将该稿本成书的大致经过和主要参与人员基本廓清﹐进而得出结论:对《沅湘耆旧诗集续编》成书贡献最巨者是晚清著名洋务活动家﹑思想家,大清国首位驻外公使﹐湘籍风云人物郭嵩焘。本文还就为什么郭氏为《续编》之纂集操持半生,却无意署纂者之名作出了分析与考订。

This article attempts to resolve some of the mysteries surrounding Yuanziang qijiu shiji xebian(Sequel to Yuanxiang qijiu ji),a Chinese manuscript now held in the University of Chicago East Asian Library's rare book collection。Containing a total of more than 18000 poems by over 18o0 poets of Human natives.this multi-volume manuscript is a compilation of the poetms by the people of Hunan Province from all walks of life who had lived in the later part of Qing Dynasty.The manuscript was never been published,and was believed to have been destroyed by fire in 1932 during the Japanesc attack to Shanghai.The author and compiler of this important set have also been unclear,Following the clues found in the writings by Lun Ming,a well-regarded scholar and book collector in the early 20th Century China.this article traced back the compilation of the manuscript,a process that had lasted for nearly 50 years and involved in a good number ofcontributors,Supported by the findings from various historical docunents of relevance including chronologies,collective works of individuol authors,diaries,and personal letters,the article concludes that although several people had made good contributions over timc,the key person who had led the compilation almost from the beginning to the end was Gu Songtan,a famous diplomat and politician of Hunan native in the late Qing period.Additionally,it concludes that the copy heldin Chicago now is indeed the copy that supposes to have been destroyed during the Sino-Japanese war.The article also shed some light on why the greatest contributor to the compilation of this book in manuscript did not put his nane as the compiler.
