Marianne Moore is particularly concerned about the cultural origin and colonial history of the United States. Her poem"Virginia Britannia"reflects the colonists’"barbaric"prejudice against the Indians,as well as their"civilized"care for Indians, which results in the loss of Indian land, language and culture, and eventually leads to the loss of Indian identity.Moore deconstructs the"barbarian"identity of the Indians by dispelling the colonists’"barbaric"prejudice against the Indians and deconstructs the colonists’"civilizer"identity by exposing the hypocrisy of colonists’"civilized"care so as to dispel binary opposition between civilization and barbarism and recognize the barbaric nature of colonization.
