Three answers-classical Hollywood narrative, " vernacular modernism", and popular melodrama are examined in answer to the question, "What did Hollywood export to the rest of the world?" Hansen’s companion formulation of a "first global vernacular" helps us immeasurably in thinking of Hollywood export product as world colonizing. Films viewed as "melodramas of race and nation" are useful to demonstrating what film melodrama theory tells us about popular narratives recruited to rationalize newly racialized social orders coincident with colonial conquest abroad. Within film and media studies there is as yet no consensus as to how to theorize what was exported, let alone what to say about what becomes of the import over there on arrival. So we have here an import-export paradox companion to that of Chinese modernity: what was exported was not the same as what was imported.
