文化认同与翻译动机——翟理斯英译《聊斋志异》研究

英国汉学家翟理斯《聊斋志异》英译本是西方译者翻译中国古典文学的经典译案。国内的翟理斯英译本研究偏重分析译本内在特质,关注社会、文学等外部因素与译本的制约关系,而忽略翟理斯作为翻译主体的个人意识与他的翻译行为之间的关联。通过细读翟理斯《聊斋志异》初译本和译者序,考证翟译本与同时代其他译本的异同,结合翟理斯其他译、著中有关中国的观点,分析和判断翟理斯英译《聊斋志异》的翻译动机,本文作者提出翟理斯个人意识中的中国文化认同倾向是其翻译《聊斋志异》的重要翻译动机,而译本的注释是表述认同倾向的主要策略。

Herbert A.Giles,the famous English sinologist,contributed much to the canonization of Pu Songling's masterpiece Liao Zhai Zhi Yi.Much academic attention has been distributed to the isolated research on the translated text and the influence of outside factors,such as ideology,poetics and so on,on the translation,but less to the subjectivity of translator the interrelationship between his identification and his translation activity.The author has made a closing reading on the first version of the translation and the translator's preface,a careful comparison between Giles’translation and other translators'works,and a comprehensive collection of Giles'reviews on China and Chinese culture.Therefore a rather safe conclusion could be drawn that Giles'identification with Chinese culture greatly motivated his translation activity,which could be attested by the notes affiliated to the translation work.
