The Revenge on Gojiingahara,one of Mori Ougai’s historical novels,depicts the revenge story of the Yamamoto family in the Edo period.The content is objective and rigorous,but it can touch the readers.Through his distinctive character modeling,Mori Ogai skillfully created the contrast and conflict of three positions in the feudal society of adhering to traditional morality,pursuing individual spirit,and skeptical of rules but unwilling to deny.From the perspective of the times,the friction of the three positions reflects the opposition between the traditional social order of modern Japan and the individual spirit.Ougai criticized the dangerous thinkers who only want to disrupt the order and blindly pursue the individual spirit,but at the same time,he advocated that the current system and morality are no longer suitable for human development.
