Adapted fromPlutarch′s Parallel Lives,William Shakespeare′s Julius Caesar dramatizes the assassination of Julius Caesar done by Roman Republicans led by Brutus and the violent ending of Roman dictatorship.Though it is not long in scope,this historical tragedy is full of ambiguities which spark the speculation of Shakespearean scholars.One of the ambiguities is Shakespeare′s attitude toward the violent assassination of Caesar by the Roman republicans.Behind this ambiguity there is Shakespeare′s deep concern for the common people.According to Shakespeare,violence cannot totally terminate rivalry of political powers,and only the peaceful transition of regimes and the universal love of the rulers can guarantee people′s tranquil life and happiness.
