From Heroes of Strength to Wave Riders of the Reform:A Study on the Screen Images and Masculinities of Chinese workers in the 1980s

新时期电影着力于现实中男性工人形象的塑造,男性工人气质有了契合时代脉搏的呈现。成为过往时代精神代言人的老一代力量型工人淡出;知识型青年工人形象成为主流,知识改变了他们的外在形象与内在精神气质;改革“铁腕男子汉”被打造成阳刚硬汉,他们的男子气概所表征的是新时期改革语境下对于理想男性气质的想象。

Films in 1980s endeavored to portray male workers'images in reality,whose temperaments were in line with the pulse of the times.The workers of the old generation as heroes of strength who once were the spokesmen of the spirit of the past era had faded out.Meanwhile,the images of knowledge-based young workers become the mainstream whose external images and inner spiritual temperaments had been transformed by knowledge.During the reform,"men with iron hands"had been turned into tough men whose manliness represented the idealized images of masculinity in the context of reform in the new era.
