Understanding Development: East Asian Miracles and Its Implications for China from the Perspective of Comparative Modernization

在发展研究中,发展概念的内涵至少经历了几个方面的变化:从关注人均占有财富量的简单增加到强调经济的可持续增长,从只关注经济的变化扩展到关注人和社会乃至政治的发展。东亚的新型工业化经济体经受住了发展内涵的一再扩展,以其为原型的发展型国家理论,丰富或挑战了以西方发达国家为经验基础的现代化理论和以拉美为原型的依附理论。东亚现代化能够成为评价改革开放以来我国发展的重要参照,也有助于深化对我国新发展观价值与意义的认识。

The connotations of the development concept have undergone at least several changes: from focusing on the simple increase in the amount of wealth per capita to emphasizing sustainable economic growth, from focusing only on economic development to focusing on social and political development. The new industrialized economies in East Asia have withstood the repeated expansion of the connotations. The developmental state theory based on it has enriched or challenged the modernization theory based on the experiences of the western developed countries and the dependency theory based on Latin America. East Asian modernization can become an important reference for evaluating China’s development since the reform and opening-up, and it can also deepen our understanding of the value and siguificance of new development view.
