Serving as the gateway of a city, the city wall embodies the comprehensive development of the politics, economy and culture of a city.Meanwhile, city walls are also the city boundaries, which restrict the range of the city, and embody urban volume and morphology.City development also leads to changes in size, technology and facilities of the walls. As vital political and commercial port cities in Central part of China,Wuchang was selected as the research object. This paper discusses the correlation between city wall transition and urban development of Wuchang in the process that the city develops from a military castle to a regional political, economic and cultural center. The urban development of Wuchang made the city walls extend outward, and dynamically integrate to the mountains and rivers. The shape of the city wall also leads the layout of urban space, with the streets extending from the city gate to form the skeleton of urban space. These streets running both inside and outside are still the main roads of the city today. The development of city economy and function is also a powerful factor to promote the transformation of Wuchang city wall.To some extent, the city wall’s survival status reflects the overall strength of the city economy and society. After the demolition of the city wall in Wuchang,a road around the city was built on its site to integrate with the development of the modern city.
