The early 1920s saw Virginia Woolf progressing towards mature modernist writing.Woolf published the short story“An Unwritten Novel”,the novel Jacob's Room, and the essay“Mr.Bennett and Mrs.Brown,”between 1921 and 1924.The three works, each of a distinct genre, occupy the pivotal position in Woolf’s literary career. In each of them,Woolf describes a similar scene of meeting some passengers in the carriage on a train journey.Woolf's revisiting of the scene deserves critical attention.Attracted by the rich import of the scene,Woolf makes it a typical episode for the writing of modernity.A further analysis of the scene in the three works will lead to a better understanding as to how Woolf works from the representation of modernity towards her mature modernist writing.
