卡维林的长篇小说《爱吵架的人,或瓦西里耶夫岛之夜》以列宁格勒老一代学院派教授洛什金返回列宁格勒,莫斯科年轻一代形式学派代表涅克雷洛夫前往列宁格勒参加文艺晚会并受到冷遇为主线,描写了新老两代语文学者的明争暗斗,勾勒出20世纪20年代俄罗斯语文学者或作家们的众生相。作者通过对现实生活中一些著名语文学家和作家,如什克洛夫斯基、波利瓦诺夫、费定、卡维林等现实原型的代入,揶揄地表达了关于当时语文学界针对长篇小说的艺术构思、叙事模式等创作之争的看法。这是一部关于艺术家的小说,属于非传统小说之列,抑或确切地说,这是一部“带钥匙的小说”。

Kaverin’s novel The Scandalist, or Evenings on the Vasilyevsky Island mainly depicts the academism representative of the old generation in Leningrad, Loshkin’s leaving Leningrad, the formalism representative of the young generation, Nekrelov’s going to Leningrad to attend a literary party thrown for him and his chilly reception there. It focuses on the overt and covert struggles between these two generations of the philologists, describing the group image of the Russian philologists or writers in the 1920 s. The author, basing his novel upon the prototypes of Shklovsky, Polivanov, Feiding and Kaverin, expresses his views on the then dispute over the artistic conception and narrative mode of the novel satirically. This is a novel about artists, belonging to the genre of non-classical prose, or in more definite terms, a "Roman à clef".
