"Covert Progression"is a brand-new concept of narrative theory proposed by Professor Shen Dan.It refers to a hidden narrative plot that runs through the text that exists behind the explicit narration. In most of Ernest Hemingway’s short stories, there is a double narrative process. The explicit narrative plot has been widely concerned by the academic circles but the hidden process is often ignored. It usually leads to the one-sidedness of the research conclusions.Taking Hemingway’s four classic short stories as an example, the thesis is going to analyze the two narrative processes, namely explicit and implicit. As a result,it can draw conclusions that are quite different from the traditional criticism. This will undoubtedly provide a new way for the interpretation of Hemingway’s works.
