Tales of Hulan River is a relatively mature work of Xiao Hong in literature and art.With her powerful observation ability,Xiao Hong took a delicate and real description of the small town Hulan in northeast China where she used to live.Feudalism,isolation,lack of family affection and traditional arranged marriage made Hulan a place Xiao Hong wanted to escape from.However,when Xiao Hong really stepped into the new world,she was faced with frustrations in love repeatedly and financial difficulties.Hulan in memory became the spiritual support to her wandering soul.The novel recalls the people and things in Hulan from a unique perspective of childhood,and reveals writer’s deep pursuit of the free life in the gentle and natural narration.
