The first Fulbright scholars visiting China in 1948-49 was a special group of people in the history of China-United States cultural exchange. They not only went through the most turbulent moments of Chinese politics and China-U.S.relations,but also recorded what many local intellectual elites or ordinary people have thought and done during that time.In this essay,I try to explore the story about one of these first Fulbright scholars,a well-known American anthropologist Robert Redfield’s China Trip.It may serve to provide us with a relatively new perspective on Chinese society and China-U.S.relations in the 1949 Revolution.
