芮效卫的《金瓶梅》研究及其“深度翻译”模式阐释

An Explanation of David T.Roy’s Study of Jin Ping Mei and His“Thick Translation”Mode

明代世情小说《金瓶梅》在西方世界的传播始于19世纪中叶。在众译本中,美国汉学家芮效卫耗时30年完成的《金瓶梅词话》全译本被认为是“迄今为止最好的英译本”。作为一位典型的研究型译者,芮效卫成功地将学术研究与翻译结合,不仅将《金瓶梅》版本选择、作者身份考据和张竹坡评点的学术观点融入译文,还在译本中增加学术序言、人物表和大量注释,对西方读者重新审视《金瓶梅》的文学价值发挥了重要作用。与此同时,芮译本的成功也印证了中国典籍域外传播由“通俗”走向“经典”的必经之路。

The Ming realistic novel Jin Ping Mei began to spread in the West since mid-19th century.Among various translated versions,the full English version of Jin Ping Mei Cihua translated by American sinologist David T.Roy in three decades has been regarded as“the best English version so far”.As a typical scholarly translator,David Roy successfully combined academic study with translation,integrating his scholarly viewpoints of Jin Ping Mei’s edition selection,authorship and Zhang Zhupo’s commentary into the translation,attaching an academic preface,a cast of characters and plenty of information supplement and annotations as well.Roy’s translation has played a vital role for western reader to re-evaluate the literary value of Jin Ping Mei.Meanwhile,the success of Roy’s translation verifies the proper transmission way of Chinese classic works abroad is from“popularity”to“classics”.
