Eveline and The Horse Dealer’s Daughter are representative short novels written by James Joyce and D.H.Lawrence respectively,which express their concern about the negative influences of industrial civilization and the living conditions of modern women.From the perspective of space theory and literary ethical criticism,the paper analyzes the material,psychological and social space presented in the two works,reveals the contradictory psychology and vague ethical identity of Eveline and Mabel in the depressed ethical environment,compares their different ethical choices in space practices,and expounds the ethical views of Joyce and Lawrence,so as to warn that modern women should get rid of the shackles of the patriarchal society and pursue happiness rationally while maintaining their independent consciousness.
