Outlying growth refers to the way of urban expansion in which the new construction land is separated from the original construction land.It is a common phenomenon in the rapid urbanization of Chinese urban development.Based on the multi-source geographical big data and land use data covering the study area, patches are regarded as a unit to analyze the spatial vitality of the newly added outlying patches from 1995 to 2015 in China's three major urban agglomerations.Research results show that:the Yangtze River Delta Urban agglomeration(YRDUA)has the largest number of outlying patches and the largest total area, while the average patch area and spatial activity are the smallest;the Pearl River Delta Urban agglomeration(PRDUA)has the smallest number of outlying patches, and the largest average patch area and the highest spatial activity, while the most unbalanced distribution of spatial activity was found in the outlying patches of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Urban agglomeration(BTHUA).The research results of this paper provide a reference for understanding and grasping the development status of outlying-type development zones in China's three major urban agglomerations in the past 20 years and for exploring healthy and reasonable urban expansion patterns.
