SahashiJingorou is Mori Ougai’s third historical novel.In the past,most of the studies believed that the protagonist SahashiJingorou was a positive character valuing the contractual spirit,but they ignored his treacherous and greedy side.Through objective detailed analysis about the content,it can be inferred from the implicit logical relationship that SahashiJingorou is upright apparently but selfish inside.Then the theme of this work is reached that it is not for criticism,but to express SahashiJingorou’s lament for his fate and his stubbornness to implement himself.Combined with the turbulent social background at that time,it can be detected that the author Mori Ougai has sighed for his life and integrated good wishes into this work in his late years that he can still live an ideal life even out of the present environment.
