There is a rigorous water complex within Wang Zengqi which originates from the water worship tradition in Chinese culture implanted from his childhood life.This water complex impacts considerably on his novel creation:water always making its presence in his landscape depictions;his characters,young ladies in particular,always granted with a profound water spirit,this unique style of his novels thus to be termed“running-water style”.As a sage merged in the traditional water culture,Wang’s novel creation directed by this complex proves to be an inheritance and promotion of South-Yangtze cultural vein,and a continuation of the long-terminated“Peking Style”literature tradition,and directly leads to the conception and birth of“root-finding novels”and“pioneering novels”,connecting the previous and the following literary periods.
