As one of the most important works of August Wilson's The Pittsburgh Cycle,Fences shows the living space of the African Americans represented by the Maxsons.Based on Edward Soja's theory of space,it can be found that Wilson has shown the complexity of African Americans'cultural identity and the trauma and oppression that racism has brought to African Americans through the construction of the first space of materiality, the second space of spirituality and the third space of inclusiveness.
